Scatarie: Treasure Island

The story of the frigate Feversham is also narrated here for the first time. Lost off Scatarie Island during a gale in October 1711, ninety people drowned while forty six survived. With the wreck’s discovery in 1968, Storm and his team were able to recover a large number of coins that included the largest hoard of American colonial pieces ever found, as well as British, Dutch and Spanish specie. This chapter is a fascinating read for those who take delight in tales of treasure. Of particular interest to numismatists are the many pictures of the recovered coins. The well illustrated book also contains exciting accounts and documented facts on ships and treasures still waiting to be found, some in shallow water from St. Paul to Scatarie, and some scattered along beaches from Louisbourg to Point Michaud. The yet-to-be-found riches include the Sovereign, Tilbury, St. Michael and a mystery galleon believed to be the King’s ship Triton. With maps, photos, diaries, and drawings, Alex Storm’s adventures come alive again.
